Well, after months and months, my divorce is settled. I signed the papers today. They still need his signature and then have to go through the court, but it shouldn't take long now. It has been such a difficult few years, it is sometimes hard for me to really look at it all. I called my pals tonight to go to dinner, but it just didn't work out. It was pretty short notice after all. But tonight I find that I am sad. I wonder if I will be able to get that close with anyone again. I wonder if anyone is up for the challenge of me. Guess you can tell that I have been talking with estranged one. That is pretty much how I feel after I talk with him. I really don't do well with the half empty version of life. So after some tears and half a box of Puff later, I am wondering if I will be able to breathe tonight when I sleep! Well enough of that, my keyboard is getting soggy!

I worked a bit this morning, and then after the lawyer and arguement with the soon to be ex, went out for some retail therapy. My fave Steinmart is closing, so I got some jeans for $25 and then I went to Hancocks and I got some supplies I need for the Amy Butler purses I have waiting in the wings. I got the free patterns and they are awesome!!! So I can't wait for the next sewing day...Doug I hope you won't be feeling well in early March when I am on Spring Break! Or who knows, we made need a Sunday adventure in Buford at the Kraft Haus pretty soon!

School is all about OB and Peds. I got to see a 2 hours old baby on Friday! So cute!!!! Especially since I don't have to keep her!!!! If you know me, you know I love other people's kids quite a bit! And I have a research class. I am in the minority, but I really like research. And it is good to be studying again. Yea, I know.... My clinical supervisor is awesome..THANK GOD! It makes all the difference!

So, I am off to check my emails again and see what is shakin on facebook. I feel better just typing all of this. Guess this virtual therapy does work huh?

So can you believe how different the colors knit up? Weird huh? This is a no purl Monkey sock by the way. Wow do they knit up quick! Thanks Doug for the yarn!!! My SAFF present. Look at this beauty!!! Jane knitted this and gave it to me for my birthday. It is so gorgeous! I will always cherish this!!! Now if it will only get cold!!

Finally I can put up this FO. I made these socks for Claudia. This yarn is from our first dyeing project together. The pattern is from Sockamania and ....

I won this from a drawing for posting my picture!! It is superwash merino and bamboo in the colorway Missy. Nice huh? I got the parcel from England just today!!!

I also finished the gift for my friend from the hand spun hand dyed Claudia worked up for me. She just loved it and couldn't believe it. The color was right on too!

And I finished a little scarf, but I maxed out on the picture limit for this post.

Tomorrow, Doug, Brett, and I will have a sewing day at Claudia's Kraft Haus! I have an Amy Butler purse to finish and Doug is at the fabric store as we speak getting material for project bags alla Jane's design.

I have really enjoyed my break! I feel like a human again. Just my happy silly self.

Today, I went to Abalama and dressed up in a big purple organza dress, tiara, and monkey slippers. I took my magic wand and was the Mystery Reader for my great niece's K4 class. Then I spent a large part of the day with my Dad and gave my Mom a break. She went to the bookstore and had a chai latte. These are 2 of her most favorite things to do and she relished the chance to be alone for a bit. She is the sole caretaker of my father who requires 24/7 attention. So now if I can just get my nose to stop running all will be well in Nancyland.

Sweet jesus in heaven I made it through this semester! I cannot believe it! I had the worst exam of my academic career! (that is no small statement!) But I passed and will be moving on next semester! Two of my study buddies just about had a nervous breakdown after the exam. I put them in my car and gave them the options of exercising, buying yarn (luckily I am the only knitter or I am SURE I would have ended up with with too much cashmire) shopping or food. The immediate and dare I say obvious choice was food. Not just anyfood but real comfort food...Cracker Barrel. YIKES! But oh my my my what a beatiful thing a table full of carbs and fat is when you are about to lose it! So if you need to reach me I will be the one drinking and tinking for the next week....I am not kidding!

I am on the home stretch. This semester has been ROUGH and I have had a lot of personal stuff going on too. But I am about to meet with some of my study buddies and look at Pharm AGAIN. Then hit the stack of typed pages that is about 1.5 inches thick for the next test. SO on Monday at 1 then Tues at 9 are my finals. Send your prayers, good thoughts, spidey sense vibes whatever it takes so I can do well enough to pass this semester. May the Force be with ME!xoxo

One of the secret projects is complete. My friend Kourtney (who just started knitting and comes on Friday's to Knitch FYI) is from upstate New York. Every year, she and her husband go back and go to the State Fair. So this year, I asked if they had any roving. I thought maybe it would be cheap and my spinning friends could totally make out like bandits. But alas, my yarn hording buddies of course are up to thier arm pits in roving. BUT Claudia said "Hey Nance, if you want me to spin it for you I will." So I thought hmmmmm, sounds interesting. So I got some cream colored Romney and some brown something. Then it occured to me....Kourtney's big 40 is the end of December, I will make her something from the roving that she is connected to. It is a SURPRISE!!!!! So one of the adventures that Claudia and I had this past Sunday was dyeing the yarn. She finished spinning it on Friday, right in front of Kourtney I might add. I feel so SNEAKY! So check out Claudia's blog for the picture. It totally ROCKS and I think it will be an awesome gift!

A Bit Meloncholy I Guess

I was sitting here tonight thinking how wonderful it is to have my Friday Night Knitting friends. I met them when I was having a tough time in my marriage. The way we laughed and they got my jokes and didn't mind that I was/am a bit loud and crazy and added a bit of adult humor made me know that we would all be friends. So two plus years later, I love them more than ever and some have made permanent places in my heart.
Even when our friendships were first starting, they promised to knit me every night if I left my husband. That was just the extra boost I needed to make good choices for myself.
Now I am only 3 semesters and 5 weeks away from being through nursing school, alone again, my dad is quickly progressing in the last stage of Alzheimer's, and sometimes when I just feel so overwhelmed and down,I know that Friday night is a comin and I am sure to feel loved and have some laughs. I think a good motto is that you don't have to feel great to come, but you will probably feel better when you leave. So here's to you my fabulous friends at Knitch...you know who you are....thank you for the wonderful addition to my life.

It's been a while since a post, but I am doing better!!!

This is an awesome pattern! Shamus from Knitty. I made only a couple of changes....I made a frog closure from Nicky Epstein instead of the ribbon and hooks idea. It was my first celtic braid and I am tickled with how it turned out. I used Cascade 220 tweed. Can't wait for it to get cold enough to wear it!!! Ahhhh knitting in Atlanta!

Wow I can't believe it was the first of May since my last blog! But summer school is over! Stats and Abnormal Psyc out of the way! Also, I spent 8 days being a sort of nurse at a camp for kids with organ transplants, kidney disease, etc. Before you go awww don't think for one minute that these kids are high energy crazies. I had seven 9 year old boys. Good grief! But I am back and realizing how rusty my knitting skills have gotten. I am starting a project for a friend's birthday. You know how knitting on a time line is, BUT after my 3rd start on the freaking thing, I have high hopes this round is the charm! HA! Also, I am in my new apartment and really liking it other than it is a bit hot. But it is July in Atlanta afterall. So if anyone is even reading this anymore, drop me a note and let me know what is shakin!

Free At Last!!!

By now you have probably heard me shouting from the rooftops! I am finished with my first year of nursing school! I have 3 B's for the semester and that makes me happy! I haven't worked this hard for B's since graduate music theory classes! Anyway, I am excited to have some time to knit. I spent most of the afternoon on Sunday outside and knitting. I have made peace with my red tweed and have gotten in the continental purling groove. I should be finished with the Samus sweater pretty soon. I have the right side completed and most of the back and left side. The braids are all done, so I will just have to do the sleeves. I am still trying to think of something cool for the closures. The pattern calls for grograin ribbon and hooks. Not gonna happen. After seeing the tiny cable on Doug's squeeze cheese, I am considering some kind of cable that overlaps and has button holes. hmmmm....

On the HOME STRETCH

Okay, I really have no idea where that saying came from. Anyone know? But I have only 2 weeks of school left. Yes that is correct only 2 *&%$@#^ weeks and year one is done! I will go to summer school, but that is beside the point!
I gave the tomato hat and booties to my classmate. She was just beside herself and promised a picture once the baby is born. It made me all warm and fuzzy and stuff.
I am working on a sock now from Sockmania. It is the April pattern. So I will post a pic soon. Also, I still working on the red sweater with the Celtic braid at the bottom. It is so freaking boring now because I am just on the knit 216 stitches then purl 216 stitches. If I could just sit in front of drying paint, my night would be made!

My sister Lynne has a friend who knits these little cutties. It was a birthday gift to me! (Dec)
My first attempt at entrelac. I really liked it once I got the hang of it. I gave it to my niece Brandy for her birthday. Noro silk garden light.

These are from the Sockmania patterns. It is hard to see the details in the pics. This is yarn the Lou brought me back from Fiber Fair in Fall. (say that 3x's fast!)

And last but not least the little tomato outfit! Sorry the stuffing is bumpy. It is not a growth! And the shuhe pattern is from Claudia. LOVE IT!!! And just for the record, I took some time to knit before my last big exam and made a better grade. Just a little FYI :-)

I just finished the tomato baby beanie and even a stranger in Caribou stopped by to tell me it is the cutest thing she has ever seen. I am just beside myself. I took a break from studying, watched Dirty Dancing (believe it) and started the hat. Then I am using Claudia's Oma's Baby Schue pattern to make matching booties. That pattern is so fun to make and you know I just love that it has been passed down through the generations. The booties are red with a green chain stitch string. I have finished one and when the other is done I will put pics up. There is a girl in my classes that is having an unanticipated bundle of joy this spring. All I needed was an excuse right! xoxoxo

Hey all! I hope that your Easter was fun and full of chocolate. I got in trouble for not posting so here you go! I went to Bama and hid eggs for my precious little pumpkin nieces. A little kid lovin' goes a long way with me. I just love getting hugged on!

I have an idea and am sure some of you must have tried it. I wondered about using the egg dying kits to dye yarn? I got some from the bargin bin at publix. Any advice???????

I finished one of my petra hand warmers. The thumb was a little funky, but you know I can improvise! I was NOT going to have to redo any of the braid, so I of course winged it (should that be wung?) Anyway, I have started the other and am totally cook-coo for that Malibrigo silk blend. It is almost obscene! (Well, aren't we all?)

I am trying my new goal of getting to Knitch at least once a month. School only has 6 weeks left and of course 5 of those have an exam. boo hoo for me. But my first year will be done baby! I will be Nurse Nancy before you and drop a needle!

She's Alive!

Okay, by now probably no one is even bother to check this blog since I have not written since October. What can I say? I have still been knitting only now it is when I can no longer focus on studying. Funny, I found that when I hit the wall studying, knitting a few rows can get me back on track. Amazing to me! I have made some scarves, ripped that freaking Vanilla Spice sweater (pattern was making me nuts!) done some cables and hand warmers. Taught some more folks to knit. I revamped the pattern for the Son of Stitch and Bitch reversible argyle scarf that some of us are doing the knit along. Well those of us who didn't wienie out! I am doing my first entrelac and am surprised at how much I like knitting that pattern. And here I just thought Steve was crazy...well that's another story all together now isn't it!

Love Socks, baby Love Socks

Well well well, I learned the hard way that I should do a swatch on BOTH colors. I got to the heel on the first try and hmmmm it was more like a bowl for elves. So frog frog frog all the way up to the first row of the pattern. I was making this a little too tight. Who wants to work at putting a sock on? So here is round two. But the first row is still too tight and the top is too loose. So I will probably rip it all out. I started work on the second sock. Not too upsetting since this is my first FairIsle project. I wasn't expecting perfection right off the bat. But Doug showed me Elizabeth Zimmerman's trick and tah dah, much better with the tension! I ended up going down 2 sizes for the Claudia's Hand Painted yarn. So the contrast is on size 0, the other on size 2. I am using the Knit Picks steel double pointed. I am still getting used to them. The are a little slippery but not bad and the length is in between so that is different too. But I do like how sturdy they feel. I don't feel like I am going to snap them in half. I have ordered some more sizes. Let me know if you like them or not. I am curious!
I was happy to wear my garter bar sweater today. Yea Fall! I felt pretty cute in it. It is pretty gratifying to wear a hand made item.

How gorgeous is this yarn?! wool, bamboo, what's not to love! And if was a gift from my friend Doug. How sweet is that?! I just love early Christmas gifts! And as I got to thinking about it, it is the first yarn anyone has ever bought for me. So this along with Claudia's Handpainted in thistle are making my noughts and crosses a.k.a. hugs and kisses socks! My first attempt at FairIsle AND Claudia and Melissa BOTH got me a little yarn holder for my finger. I feel so loved and I must say I like it! I had been having a really crappy couple of weeks and this made me feel SO much better.
XOXOXO (don't worry, I'll fix the mistake! of course I had to take the picture in that side! :-) This will be such a special pair of socks for me! Yarn from Doug, holders from Melissa and Claudia, a lesson too from Claudia and hugs and kisses. Could I be more of a sap?

This little pumpkin was another fun surprise for me this week. I found it filled with Weight Watcher friendly bubble gum. Thanks Melissa!

One of my professors is great with child so I made this for the new baby. I didn't want it to seem like I was trying for brownie points, so I left it on her door with no name. Besides, a little mystery can be good. And interestingly enough, it was the day of her shower given by the faculty. Double mystery! I just love that timing!

I went to a house warming tonight and this was the gift I took. Famous Steve helped me and boy was it Gee-orgeous! They were stunned and had a fit over it.

Here is my current project. It is Vanilla Spice from the Spring Knitty web site. I am using the chocolate Rialto from Debbie Bliss. The little twist this yarn does on the left side of the stitch is annoying, but it feels really good and the color is YUMMY! The way the Rialto is is put together makes it stringy if you have to take it out....no, I NEVER have to do that! I got the yarn at the Knitch Lucky Duck sale. The picture of the pattern is not so clear, it has an interesting pattern to it. every 4th row of ST you throw in a purl stitch every few stitches. So it is still pretty simple but has some texture. Once you figure out how to read the pattern that is :-).

The Garter Bar Cardigan

It's Finished! I liked this pattern. It knits up fast and I like the design. The problem with the sleeves was a pain. I ended up adding 8 stitches and all is well. The mother of pearl button looks the way I envisioned so that's a bonus! It is a little snug and shorter than I thought, but I feel pretty sure this will be well worn when it gets cool. Oh yea, by the way, as of this week I have lost 26.4 pounds!!! Yipeee!

Since Knitch is undergoing renovation this weekend, Lou, Doug, Melissa and I met at Roxx's...home of the Yarn Doctor. It was actually nice enough to sit outside on the patio. Wunderbar! The sweater I have been doing had a mistake in the pattern. The sleeves are way too tight...even if I wore my arm girdles! So on the advice of Doug and Claudia, I made some inserts for the sleeves. Blocked them, stitched them, hated them. So frog frog frog and start over. Hmmm...I wondered why I felt like I was knitting for the quadropuss! (Four sleeves) But at least it won't irritate me to death AND it was not my knitting that was the problem, but the pattern. That would be the 3rd, yes 3rd, problem pattern in a freaking row! SO relaxing!!! But I enjoy the company most of all.

I am going to start a Nurses who Knit group at my university. We will do premi stuff, scarves etc for battered women's shelters etc etc. I have had a TON of interest in this. I will start them off with the basics...you know me, Ms. Garter Stitch herself! :-) But I would love it if some of my knitting buddies would help out OR come to the NWK groups! I have slated it for beginners and seasoned knitters alike and will open it up for anyone who is interested. Let me know what you think! Always up for some good ideas. Also if you have a group in need, let me know and I will put it in the list of possibilities.

I found this cool vase on sale at IKEA-$3- and put the left over yarn from projects in the vase. That way the good memeories from each project can bring it's magic to the room. So all the memories and happy faces of people for whom I have knitted things are with me. Then I put all the freaking wooden needles I could find in the vase. Cause you know once you have gone Addi there's no turning back...mwah ha ha ha!! And tah-dah the KNITTING ART FROM OUTER SPACE!

A lot has happened in 2 years

On Aug 15 2005 I found out that I had cancer. I celebrate my survivor day on Nov 23rd which was the last day of treatment. It was found on my very 1st mammogram. I had no family history and am considered a young survivor. Please urge all the women in your life who are 35 and older to go and get 'em squished! I am alive because we found it early. My surgeon told me if I had waited until I was 45ish this would have probably killed me.

I have been thinking of all that has gone on since then. I was newly married when I found out, not knitting a thing, and living in the burbs. Now I am single again, knitting up a storm and have found a great bunch of folks that really mean a bunch to me. My new adventure of nursing school starts on Monday and after 6 years of sharing an office with the same person, I have a new space and a new office mate. And I have a new living arrangement and lots of pets!
Those are some really big life changes. But I feel good, I am pretty healthy and knitting is such a good meditation for me. I can carry it around, enjoy coffee shops and K2TOG is really true for me.

My next project is the garter bar cardigan. It is a Cindy Taylor pattern and I am using the Araucania Nature Wool in lime. I am using 2 strands and the gauge works out great! I will be on the hunt for a funky big green button for the front. I got this yarn for a steal at www.littleknits.com. Thanks to Claudia again for helping me get this together!

Sweater Wizard YIKES

I tried my first go at the sweater wizard. While others I have asked love it I did not fair so well. I have rechecked my input and I did do a swatch and I was right on gauge. Well the first go 'round, I got about half way up the body and tried it on. It looked like a hot air balloon cozy! So rip, rip, rip. Down two needle sizes. The the next time.....hello mobius! So then I gave up on in the round and made it in 2 pieces. Finally done, I blocked, washed, dried and shock...too big still. Fit in the bust no where else. So thanks to Doug (LUMI), the master,he did a big tapered mattress on the seams and took it up about 10, believe it, rows and it looks MUCH better. I did an i-cord for the flowers. Yes, the infamous gyno i-cord, and got the hex beads from Michael's for the middles. The flowers and leaves are from a Nicki Epstein book. Of course I have one on the back...thanks Melissa!

I used Cotton Ease for all the parts on the vest. Feels GREAT after the wash and dry, but the yarn was a mess to work with. Lots of twisting and yarn barf everywhere, even after putting in on the swift. But it feels so good now I would probable try again.

How I lost my first tape measure

Well, I don't know about you but I am a better person because I knit. I knit because of the great folks I have grown to love along the way. I can't imagine a better bunch of crazies like the ones I was lucky enough to join here in Atlanta. We are all better froggers since our Friday nights, that's for sure. Most of the time we laugh and laugh, a great mental cleanser! For the first blog, I want to share how I lost my tape measure...Claudia, this one's for you!I was at the gyno's office, I of course had a knitting project with me because I knew I would have to wait and I am not the most patient person in the world. Finally after about a 45 minute wait, I was taken back to the western room...you know the one with the stirrups! So I did as I was told, undressed from the waist down and put the lovely paper sheet around me. Well, this wasn't my first rodeo I knew it would be a while, so I continued knitting the i-cords for the decorations on my summer tank (which by the way is driving me crazy, but more on that later). Finally the doc comes in and I finish my little row (you know it is only 3 stitches), put the yarn, needles etc in the little bag and toss it in the chair. I reposition myself for the exam and hear a weird clank as something falls on the floor. Hmmmm, was that an instrument? So after I am done and dressing, I notice a small round blue and green tape measure on the sink. Naturally, I debated on stealing, I mean taking, it. But then I wondered, hmmmm....what IS the doc measuring with this? Also, I noticed a small white tape measure too. Big deal I have a little white one...or so I thought. I just left them in the room, I couldn't get past what MIGHT have been measured with that thing. When I get home, I get my i-cord out again and need to measure it. Can't find MY tape measure. Well KARMA! I had not moved it off my lap when I scooched down and it hit the floor in the doc's office. Mine was the white one on the sink. HA! I wonder what the doc thought of that thing falling to the floor!
